Description

B. T. Batsford, London, 1949. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket condition good. Color good. Slight tear at top edge of spine section of jacket and some edge and bottom wear on the jacket.   A good first edition which hasn’t even been opened all the way (“cracked” ?). Contains 16 beautiful full color plates (#16 is shaded from the dust jacket). Offset to two end pages from the DJ (on the first and last page). This seems typical of all the copies in my research. Green boards unevenly faded to cream except the spine (also typical in my research). A tight square unmarked copy with sharp corners.  8″ x  9″ tall. Some age toning on the jacket. Printed in The Netherlands.

Publisher’s Note: “It is our intention, in this new Series, to make available to the public at a moderate price a varied selection of the comparatively little known wealth of beautiful colour illustration in the drawings, aquatints, lithographs and other prints of the 18th and early 19th centuries – the period at which the art of fine illustration was at it’s height.

A new method of reproduction, combining chromolithography with up-to-date offset technique, has enabled us to produce practically complete fidelity to the originals, and make the high standard of reproduction a most outstanding feature of this series. ”

The curve in the photos are just because I didn’t want to open the book all the way to flatten the page.

The back of each plate is devoid of print.
